The Elyd 50, open 50 class ocean racer, by Eole Laval
now over 9000 happy owners....
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The elyd 50 was developed in 2007 by Eole Laval, an RL yacht builder. The boat was featured at the 2007 TYC Boat Show. It was the first sailboat in SL to use the canting keel technology (a keel that can be rotated for more efficient sailing performance) and one of the first to use apparent wind (after Owen Oyen's ACC Yacht, but before Mothgirl Dibou's Flying Fizz).
Eole released this boat free to my friend Manul Rotaru, with the intention that it should help to develop sailing in SL in general and sailboat building technology in particular. This is a mayor reason I am bringing this little jewel to the public right now: to let you get acquainted with the high level of development sailing simulations have achieved in Second Life. So far, well over 4000 Elyd 50's have found their way to happy sailors in SL, experienced as well as new ones. Making it one of SL's most widespread realistic sailboats.
This boat is also available in-world at: http://slurl.com/secondlife/dex/200/20//
Eole Laval's own blog can be found at http://eolelaval.blogspot.com/
Since the controls of the Elyd are comparable to those of the Flying Tako by Kanker Greenacre, I have used his instructions and edited a few things where the Elyd 50 differs. This is especially in the fields of rezzing the boat and accepting the hud and wearable hull, the use of the canting keel and the use of apparent wind by this boat.

Let's first start with some information on the Open 50 class:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The open 50 (and also open 60) are race classes for open ocean sailboats. They are amongst the most advanced wind-powered racing machines on the planet. Most wellknown race for them being the ''Vendee Globe'', a single handed, non-stop, around-the-world-race.
A little more on the class itself maybe best explained by a number of links:

Canting keel information:
---------------------------
The traditional fin keel, pointing straight down from the boat, provides no righting moment when the boat is level. The heeling force of the wind on the sails is therefore not counteracted until the boat has heeled over by a certain amount, moving the fixed keel to windward of the centerline. The purpose of the canting keel is to allow the boat to develop righting moment when level, by swinging the keel to windward independent of the boat's angle of heel.
With the canting keel handling the ballast functions, lateral resistance and steering can be managed separately with a foil (or pair of foils fore and aft). This allows for much quicker maneuverability than traditional keelboats, with about half the weight usually required for ballast.
A version of the technology was invented and patented by CBTF Technology in the 1990s, and saw its first use in major competition in September 2004, in Maxi Yachts. I recent years, canting keels have become especially well-known for their application in the around-the-world Volvo Ocean Race.

QUICK START INSTRUCTIONS:
-------------------------------
1) Rezz the boat in-world, the vehicle part will rezz the hull part
2) sit on the skipper poseball
3) a dialog will appear, accept both the hud and the boat hull to attach
3) To start sailing right away, say "raise".
4) To steer left and right, use the left/right arrow keys or the 'a' and 'd' keys (when not in chat mode).
5) To move the sail in or out, use the up/down arrow keys or the 'w' and 's' keys.
6) To come to a full stop, say "moor".
* If you don't know the first thing about RL sailing, you should read ALL the instructions below.
KEY CONTROLS:
----------------
- Use the left and right arrow keys (or 'a' and 'd') to steer the boat.
- Use the forward and backward arrow keys (or 'w' and 's') to "sheet" (i.e., pull the mainsheet (i.e., the rope)
that pulls the mainsail in and out.
- Use the page up and page down keys (or 'e' and 'c') to trim the spinnaker.
VOICE COMMANDS (on channel 0 or 1):
----------------------------------------
"raise" -- raise the mainsail and begin sailing.
"lower" -- lower the mainsail and stop sailing. Note that the boat will continue to drift.
"moor" -- reset the boat to non-physical state. You will have to stand up and re-sit to resume sailing.
"sheet X" -- sheets in or out the mainsail by X degrees ("sheet -5" will pull the sa

Please do a redelivery for me of the products I purchased from you as I have had some inventory issues. Thank you.
Thanks for preserving it :)
ELYD 50 were one of the first boats in SL i saw and think it were so edge-cutting cool.
Thanks for preserving it :)
here some photos of this wonderful boat from 2007 (mostly):

swing keel
The swing (canting) keel requires an entry in Chat during or after each tack, e.g. "keel xx" to cant the keel to port for a port tack or "keel -xx" to cant the keel to the starboard. In other words, to the windward side to reduce the leward heel of the boat and increase speed.
Otherwise, there are some minor alignment flaws in the assembly, but they do not seem to effect performance. When changing textures (colors) the changes are not saved, but that is also a superficial annoyance. It is a fun boat to sail although I am partial to the Ktiaba Teleri 20's HUD and sail luffing algorithms.
Astonishing
It's free?!?!?! It is an amazing build, superb textures, and a whole lotta fun... thank you!!!!
very diappointing!!!
I was sadly disappointed by the quality of this prduct. First o every time I attempted to rezz it it left small objects imbeded in my land which could leave for wasted prim, obviouslty also disappoionting that the product didnt stay intact and most disappointing is the failure to creat this to scale. By standards this product rezzes more as a 15' boat than a 50'. not even xovering three quarters of mmy 25' dock. I realize this product was free and thereore shouldnt complain howver i think others should know that they will be disapointed!
Nice.
This is a nice boat. Great piece for a stationary boat. After right clicking everything, I could see the sails may come out, but I haven't figured that part out yet, probably need to read the instructions. LOL But very nice overall. Thanks!
