Facilities for the mentally ill were largely ineffective up until the 20th century.
Bethlem was no different.
Originally opened in 1247 as a homeless shelter, for societies criminals, drunks, drug addicts, lazy, and insane, it turned into one of the first official mental asylums by the early 1300's. Violent or dangerous inmates were chained and manacled to the walls or floors. Patients were flogged and whipped regularly as well as other rumored brutalities.
Known for its sadistic sideshows, Bethlem Asylum would invite the public to see the spectacles or to poke and torment the lunatics with sticks till they screamed in anguish.
If you listen hard, you can hear the scraping of the chains...The screams of madness....
Bethlem Asylum is a large structure with many large spacious rooms with high ceilings. Most doors have been replaced with a new mesh wooden door. A wild bush grows along the front of the structure. Inside it has jail cells and many observatory rooms. A great halloween haunted house.

OK Ive been an SL resident since 2007 and I know all about homes. These textures are truly the gritty ones I have been looking for. This designer knows what were looking for and must be as gritty as we are. This is a really amazing place and all the displays on the sim are equally enticing! Dark fantasy has finally come to my second life! Thanks so much and keep these designs coming .... AMAZING!
Beautifully creepy
Amazing attention to detail with gorgeous textures & great atmosphere. I originally saw this as part of a build for a MadPea hunt & was impressed with it then...even more so now I've had a chance to rez it & play with it myself. Easy to set up, & fun to use, this impressive & large building is sure to make a statement on your build.
The crown jewel
When it comes to creeping, dark buildings that just oozes of atmosphere and makes you smell the mold as soon as you hit "rez" on the box, then the always nice and helpful P4NDORA is surely the unchalenged master. No doubt about that.
I got a lot of her buildings. Some rezzed at my parcel, others are waiting in my inventory for the next time I rebuild. I like variations lol. And although the same high quality shines through every single structure, this massive Asylum is surely the crown jewel in the collection.
Is it "better" than the so called baby version? No. Its just bigger. You could argue that its too big to use for a house to live in and that the baby asylum feels more tight for that need. But its a matter of taste. Me I love them both equaly for various reasons and can't really decide. In any case both are copy-mod, just like everything in SL should be, so you can tweak and combine if you want. Not that any tweaking is needed to make it look better, everything is perfect as it is, but the option is there.
All that is left to say is this: Yet another amazing build that leaves you breathles from the moment you enter the frontdoor. Wow!
Absolutely Amazing.
Love everything about it, the style the grungy messed up style its simply great. The textures and colors, the rooms and the way its set up makes me just love it. And of course the customer service is one of the best i had. Thank you Pandora for your sympathy and kindness. 5 starts do not make justice to this construction.
More then you expect
The pictures really don't do it any kind of justice when I bought it I thought it was going to be a plain build and I'd have to do so much .. or pay other people to do it since I fail at building. But the textures, lighting, and overall feel of the building is overwhelmingly amazing. When I rezzed it and walked in I was very pleased with my purchase and couldn't wait to begin decorating. It was purchased for a RP sim and it matches the grungey torture environment perfectly. Thanks for putting so much work into it so detail oriented people could enjoy the build. WELL WORTH THE MONEY
