Draw clothes, skins, tattoos or whatever you want, directly onto the SL avatar model! Texture design software for Windows (XP, Vista, Win7, Win8; 32 or 64 bit).
It's been nearly 10 years since I first released AvPainter, and now it's time to say goodbye. I will no longer be able to offer any support, and there's no further development planned, so I'm making the software available to everyone for no charge.

Current owners, you can download the new version using the url you previously used. Re-rez your AvPainter Computer object in world to get the url again.
AvPainter is a tool to aid the creation of clothing for Second Life, allowing you to preview clothes and draw directly onto the avatar model. It is a separate application that runs in Windows, outside of Second Life, exporting targa (.tga) texture files to upload into SL.
You buy the AvPainter package which contains these instructions and a AvPainter Computer. The AvPainter Computer is a stylish computer model that you can keep out in your SL home if you wish. On rezzing, the AvPainter Computer will give you your own registration code and url for downloading the full version.
The full version of AvPainter occasionally checks for updates. You will be able to download any updates for AvPainter for no extra charge.
Although they can run side by side, AvPainter runs best without SL running. SL tends to grab a lot of texture memory and slows AvPainter a lot.
Requirements
------------------
AvPainter installer includes the necessary XNA/DirectX components. You will need the following:
A PC running Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8 (32 or 64 bit).
A graphics card with PS1.1 & VS1.1 support
Help
-----
Full instructions are included with AvPainter (via Help->Show Instructions menu option).
- Paint clothes directly onto a Second Life avatar
- Paint sculpties
- Paint OBJ files
- Easy to use, deceptively powerful
I would be lost without this tool. This saves you all those 10L upload fees until you are absolutely SURE you have the texture correct. My only complaint is I wish the blur tool was a less pixalated in how it functions.
A pretty incredible product. But it has many flaws, and missing features. Which I hope will be improved upon in future.
1. When painting around seams, there are pixels which are only half on the avatar, and half off. They can't be painted with a single pixel brush, so the only way to do them is to use a larger area brush. This can be messy in some parts.
2. All the clothes are tight onto the avatar. There are no options to preview looseness like in SL. I'm trying to make a loose shirt, and it's something of a guessing game as av painter can't offer a preview of the loosness.
3. There is also the point that the avatar in av painter is stuck in the neutral T pose, which avatars in SL rarely use. This can mainly cause issues around the top of the arms, as you still have to upload to SL to see how it looks when standing in a normal pose.
4. The camera controls are a bit fiddly, asyou alt click to mvoe the camera, and click to paint. A slip of the finger and you paint on the avatar when intending to mvoe the camera. It would be nice to hold in the middle mouse button and move, to control the camera
5. There's no reset camera button. It is possible to accidentally maneuver the camera to where there's nothing on screen. And you can't click drag on the empty space that is the background. When I got into tat situation, I had to quit and restart av painter.
6. The avatar is a pretty even default, which is the most useful generally. But less helpful if you're trying to make clothing specifically for a contorted midget, or a stretched giant. It would be nice to be able to control the avatar shape.
Wish list, then
Ability to pose avatar
Controls for adjusting clothing parameters
Avatar shape controls
better Camera controls.
Better seam painting.
That said, in spite of these, it is a great program, and well worth getting. I would gladly pay again for the additional features mentioned above.
Ive been using Photoshop for almost 15 years. This tool is not a replacement- but if you use graphic software to make your SKINS or CLOTHING then you really need to consider this program. This is a TOOL for your TOOLset.
Its not a magic do it all device- if you have no skill, you have no skill- but if you DO know how to create- THIS will save you time and money and YOU CAN SEE the textures work out even if the GRID is down.
Can you tell if your seams work when the grid is down with photoshop? No.
This is a TOOL for your TOOLs.
THE BEST feature of this is you can EDIT on the avatar directly by ERASING textures or painting onto the textures on any point of the avatar and then SAVE THEM as PSD files and take BACK into PS and edit as needed for final export.
Ive been using 2d and 3d applications professionally for 15 years, not as a hobby or something that I got a COPY of to figure out and then call myself an artist- so please take my review with that in mind
THIS tool is a serious enhancement for any artist for texturing avies/clothing for SL related textures.
If you see a negative review on this- its from novice 'artist' who either don't understand what they're doing to begin with, or competitors for SL profit that are upset that this product exist.
This product ROCKS and I'm pleasantly surprised that someone took the time and effort to create something as seriously beneficial to an artist in sl as this. THANK YOU for coding this.
I normally, like most- keep my reviews short or not at all- this product deserves my time to speak positively about.
It's a little buggy, the toolset isn't huge and it has a few quirks. But in all it sets out to do what it intended very well, and it's extremely easy to use.
A big plus for the SL like camera controls and the nice interface.
Note that this is NOT a replacement for photoshop/gimp, rather a complement. This is a highly specialized app that does one thing, help you create basic the basic outlines of an outfit and fix the seams. Anyone who's worked with clothing or skins knows what a huge timesink that is. But you'll still need some other graphics software to create details and shading.
What bumped it down from five stars is the fact that the brush never changes from a mousepointer, something that makes it really awkward to work with big brushes (you can never see exactly how large it is). I hope this is something that will be fixed in future versions.
It's not perfect, but I can't think of another app that does its tasks better. ZBrush is expensive and has a steep learning curve and odd interface. This is ten bucks and you'll learn it in minutes.
Keep up the good work! I'll definately keep using this.
excellent, I was recommended this by a friend who said, in conjuction with photoshop, this software enables some pretty delicate "seamstress" like alterations, and I am obsessed with fine tailoring in Sl...so after a dabble i have to say, wow!!!
A bargain too, well worth the 5 quid...
Thankyou!!
Handy little item if you're making clothes or tatoos. While there's a few features I'd like to see added, I can't complain about teh power of the application compared to the price. An excellent value. Not only did I get one for myself, I've also given 2 as gifts to friends.
