Tikal Temple III

One of the largest pyramids in the Americas, the Tikal Temple III stands about 55 meters tall. Also known as the Temple of the Jaguar Priest, this pyramid was built around 810 AD in the Late Classic Period.

It was erected by the otherwise little known king of Tikal called Dark Sun and it is likely to be also his tomb. This was the last giant pyramid built in Tikal shortly before the entire Mayan civilization collapsed. Today it remains unexplored and oergrown by vegetations.
