A skûtsje (pronounced 'skootshuh') is a Frisian sailing boat of the type tjalk, originally an ordinary cargo boat, but today a prized ship and one of the icons of Frisia. Skûtsjes were built from the 18th century until about 1930 and are 12 to 20 m long and on average 3.5 m wide, with a maximum of 4 m (based on the standard dimensions of Frisian bridges and sluices).

In the 1920s and 1930s many skûtsjes got engines fitted and after World War II the sails were even often removed. Nevertheless other, much larger, powered boats took over water transportation in the area and many skûtsjes were rebuilt into houseboats or luxurious sailing yachts. Over time more and more were restored in their original state.

There is a yearly racing event in Friesland called Skûtsjesilen. Such races were already held in the early 19th century, but since 1945 they are regulated through a committee, SKS. In these races, each Skûtsje represents a city or village. In 1981 another organisation, IFKS, also started organising races.

The Skûtsjemuseum in Eernewoude started building a new Skûtsje, out of wood at the old way, that is expected to be ready in 2008.

An annually held Skutsje sailing cup is named after folk hero Pier Gerlofs Donia's nickname Grutte Pier.

This is the inspiration behind this boat in sl

Its an uncomplex, compact, cheap, simple to use, and a fun basic boat that can seat a friend and can be raced too :)

QUICK START INSTRUCTIONS:
-------------------------------
1) To start sailing right away, say "raise".
2) To steer left and right, use the left/right arrow keys or the 'a' and 'd' keys (when not in chat mode).
4) To move the sail in or out, use the up/down arrow keys or the 'w' and 's' keys (when not in chat mode).
5) To come to a full stop, say "moor".
6) There is one crew ball - poseballs can be hidden with the 'show' or 'hide' command.
7) To Enter mouselook - like you are really sailing it - press the 'm' key (when not in chat mode) - and escape a couple of time to return.
8) Say 'board' to raise and lower the leeboards - or use the control hud provided (see a more detailed explanation below).
9) Wear the huds provided there are 3 in total - wind direction hud - controls hud - and camera hud - the controls hud offers commonly used commands in a simple button form
10) say 'help for help or hud for wind direction hud

KEY CONTROLS:
----------------
- Use the left and right arrow keys (or 'a' and 'd') to steer the boat.
- Use the forward and backward arrow keys (or 'w' and 's') to "sheet" (i.e., pull the mainsheet (i.e., the rope) that pulls the mainsail in and out.

COMMANDS:
----------------------------------------
"raise" -- raise the mainsail and begin sailing. Will also stop motor if motoring.
"lower" -- lower the mainsail and stop sailing. Note that the boat will continue to drift.
"moor" -- reset the boat to non-physical state.
"sheet X" -- sheets in or out the mainsail by X degrees ("sheet -5" will pull the sail in by 5 degrees).
"id#XX" -- displays a two-digit number between 00 and 99 to your boats id"id#05").
hide -- hides poseballs
show -- shows poseballs
"board" -- Raises Leeboards
"board" -- Lowers Leeboards - if the boards are down then they will dig into the water for better upwind performance.
"motor" -- lowers sails and starts motor.
"alphasails1, alphasails2 and alpha sails3" --allow you to make the rather large sails semi transparent - will reset when you rez the boat.
"help" --gives this notecard.
"vane on and vane off" --starts the wind indicator at the top of the mast.
"hud" -- will give you a twin needle wind direction hud - the brass needle states 'true wind' and the silver needle states 'apparent wind'. The grey area at the top of the hud is the boat bow (or front) if the needle is in this area you may be unable to sail as the sail will behave like a flag - so you must always zig-zag into the wind (called close-haul or tacking).
"hideappwind" or "showappwind" - this will show or hide the second hud needle as you may only want to know the 'True Wind' and the silver needle may be confusing.

Apparent wind in sailing
~~~~~~
In sailing, the apparent wind is the actual flow of air acting upon a sail, or the wind as it appears to the sailor. It differs from the true or prevailing wind seen by a stationary observer in speed and direction. In nautical terminology, these properties of the apparent wind are expressed in
