The Holy Roman Empire was a somewhat nebulous entity that covered much of central Europe for a thousand year though most of the lands within it were effectively independent entities. In theory the Emperor was elected by a some 7 (later 9) 'Electors' though from 1456 the Emperor was always a member of the Hapsburg family. It was finally dissolved in 1806.The crown is very ancient supposedly being made in the 10th century. The gems on it are not ‘cut’ as would be the case in more modern crowns but are ‘en cabochon’, an ancient technique whereby they were polished to a round shape. In rl it may today be seen in the Hofburg palace Vienna will it will remain until ' there is again an Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation'. The other crown in the set is in the form of a simple circlet and was made also in the 10th century for the Empress Kunigunde.
