Keeping the grain, apples, walnuts and all sorts of foodstuffs dry and safe from mice and other vermin was and still is a importan priority in country buildings throughout Europe.

These "horreos" or barns on stilts, were once widespread. Now they are present only in very few places and in decreasing numbers.

Our "horreo" is a faithful copy or a 13th century one found in the county of Asturias in northern Spain. It has been made in chesnut wood, which is very resistent and durable, and its construction does not involve a single nail or metalic part: each beam and post fits in nooks in the next one. The door is scripted so that it opens and closes, and you can move comfortably in the inside.

The stilts and the base is of limestone, the type of rock that is prevalent in the area, and the tiles are the half cylinder ceramic ones so widely popularized by the romans.

The space under the horreo was used to keep the cart and some other ploughing tools safe from the rain.

All the materials have been hand crafted using traditional techniques. This is doubtlessly, the best horreo currently in Second Life. It will fit perfectly in any mediaeval setting or reconstruction of farming lifeways.

I hope that you enjoy of it as much as I did building it!
