The lei custom was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by early Polynesian voyagers. Once upon a time, the lei was given to signify a peace agreement between opposing chiefs. Today, the Hawaiian Lei traditionally is given to people to whom you have an affection. Often they are given for special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, graduations and other parties.
