This is a Shakoki-Dogu, Japanese ancient clay figurine.
[As a reproduction]
- This object is modeled on an actual shakoki-dogu, that was unearthed in Miyagi, northern Japan, in 1943. The figurine is famous for its beauty and entirety (as an unearthed artifact), and is one of the Tokyo National Museum's collection as an Important Cultural Property. See this page in the museum site;

- I visited to the museum and observed the dogu with my very eyes carefully, spending a long time. Also, I photographed it from various directions and refered them to make this object. From an aesthetic view, I made its shape almost completely symmetric, while the actual one is not. I fixed the distortion of the surface pattern, too. But this object came to have a superior quality that is able to be called as a reproduction, I'm hoping.
[Beyond the eternity]
- The actual one was made a few thousand years ago. Someone of our ansestors kneaded the soil. I wanted to bring the artistic beauty of the mysterious shaping into the interactive 3D world of Second Life, to make anyone of us experience it with the feeling of reality. A descendant shaped it on the electric devices in place of kneading, so to speak. Everytime I modeled a single curve or pattern with operating a mouse, I wondered what the ancient creator saw on it, and then I felt something magnificent that was beyond the time.
- The surface texture was made with procedural methods on graphic software. Any tiny piece of existing image is not used at all. In other words, this dogu object is also a hand-made dolly, that is unique just like each of the actual shakoki-dogu is.
