In the days before Loran and GPS, mariners used Sextants, and the smart ones still keep one on board in case of electronic failure. This is recreation of an early style sextant, known as an octant, such as one would see Captain Hornblower or Lord Nelson use, and many a young gentleman sweated over it's use under the demanding visage of the Lieutenants.
