Sigh.
I have to admit when I saw this av uses BOM rather than a normal applier my eyes nearly rolled 180 degrees into my skull.
Yeah, its lovely. nice animations.
But the problem is that I'm someone who likes to tinker to avatars. if you add a modded skin to a BOM avatar, you can no longer use BOM with it due to how the system works. you'd basicly need access to the bakes in order to fix it at that point. not even mentioning if you accidentally end up applying something to the body while modding the nails/spikes. you're going to have to toss out the whole thing and restart at that point. BOM is a good system... but not for this type of avatar. I don't see the point of making something like this BOM when the older system makes everything so much smoother for modders, wich are most of the people who would buy this anyway.
Alrighty Then!
Previously I had left a very harsh and very blunt review on this avatar. Since then, I have gotten an updated box and played around with the B.O.M version and I have to say, there isn't anything poking out that shouldn't be anymore. It's much MUCH better than when it was released.
As previously stated, the rig and materials are still gorgeous, the animations are a bit spotty but my biggest plight with the avatar has since been fixed. Off to modding I get!
Off the review side I DO appreciate the work Tethys puts into his avatars and I am excited to mod this to hell and back like I do most everything I buy :)
Now we just need a Great Wyrm avatar ;)
Indeed, since Eastern Dragons eventually become Great Wyrms. This is an excellent start, and there has been a great lack of eastern dragon avatars on SL that aren't cartoonish or furry. I am so glad this is a thing now. Now I say it is time to make the winged variant! The Great Wyrm! ^.^
Worth It!
I wanted to give it a little bit after I bought it to wear it around, get familiar with it before I wrote a review. Hefty price tag right off the bat BUT. I'm super pleased with this purchase. I've seen some complaints about animations, and while they're probably not up to an industry standard maybe, you can definitely tell there was much love poured into this dragon and that's what really matters. Simply put, it's beautiful. And what's even better? You can mod it right out of the box. Granted I made a skin for it before the UV's changed but I knew it was changing to begin with, that's my fault for gettin' ancy. I just couldn't wait >w<
I'm a low end potato computer user but I can confirm, it's still awesome without advanced lighting on... and also the fact there's already little trinkets for the avatar 2 days out from release, that's promising! And I'd like to touch on the BoM aspect. At first... I didn't really get BoM. I'm like... wouldn't appliers work better?? This isn't standard LL format, this is weird. But you know what? It's grown on me. It makes sense. It's utilizing a built in SL function instead of having to use up more scripts. The UV's are also not difficult to work with in this format, which I'm surprised about.
Overall, this dragon and the European Dragon are the best SL has to offer, especially with such an active modding community. They're user friendly, the dev kit is really good and very useful. They're not too big, not too small. Devs interested in getting behind this avatar, I recommend it. I've never had this much fun working with a feral avatar, and it's not frustrating. It doesn't have a gajillion parts and UV's to try to poke at and align. Simple, to the point, and clean.
Oh, and don't worry, the creator is very adamant about bug fixes and avatar updates! So far it's been updated twice to fix a bunch of stuff.
Do it. GET IT. DO THE THING!
Early Impressions
I already am in love with the Euro Dragon, so I was excited to see the Eastern come out. BOM is a learning curve for me but I think I got the grasp of it overnight. I don't feel "at home" in this avatar yet. A big part of it is that the skins didn't have a premade light color available, and that would have been my preference and easier to work with when modding/tinting with the hud and such. The dragon comes with a very generous dev kit, and I absolute love when developers provide this. I'm hopeful that a skin more suiting for me comes out in the near future via either the creator or a 3rd party on the market.
The HUD for the AO and such of the dragon feels more improved than the last. It's broken up in to 3 parts now instead of one so that you can move the expressions, animations, and breath attacks in to separate areas. The previous HUD for this was all one and felt huge when it was open/expanded.
As for HUGE when open, the modify HUD is much larger than I like and so far I haven't found a minimize option, only a detach when done option.
I get what some others may have said about the animations, but I don't think they were rushed or bad. They just aren't to my personal tastes for this dragon. The community once again will hopefully make alternatives, as I know they did for the previous dragon. I wish it was exactly how I would imagine out of the box, but it's existence as it is will make what I want possible in the future through modding or 3rd party products.
Great AV, just one thing...
I love this AV, the mesh, animations, and texture customization. I only have one thing, that is minor, but will make a world of difference for me...I am hoping the creator updates this AV with a resize script.
