Grid Coordinates

This is certainly not my finest work here. All it is, is a simple texture I made with MS Paint that shows area coordinates of a parcel within a region.

I might be a little slower than most here, as usual, but I never seem to know where I am. And this is important to know. Why?

For example, you might own a 1/4 sim. Where in the region are you? Where is your land's center? The corner? How do you rez a prim exactly in the middle of it? Well, this simple texture can help you those coordinates.

Coordinates, your newbie self once asked? Why would I care about coordinates? What coordinates? I only come to Second Life to bebop around and see stuff.

Well, SL not only cares, but it lives on and exists only because of coordinates. Without coordinates everything would be floating in SL space.

All regions each have their own individual and unique grid coordinates. Their own special place within the virtual world of Second Life. Or, more accurately, their own place that must be known to SL's computers so they know where to put them. My region is placed at grid coordinates 822, 1400. That is absolutely critical to the computers at Linden Labs. But within each of these regions all coordinates are the same. The X,Y,Z coordinate of 128,83,29 is in the same place within a region whether it is my region or yours.

When you were new to Second Life, you learned all about X, Y, and Z coordinates. Remember? The east/west, north/south, and up/down space that all things have. When I look at the top of my personal viewer I can see that I am in Ubi Amor Flores (134,62,3500), my X, Y, and Z coordinates within my region of Ubi Amor Flores (known to SL's servers as 822,1400). It's all numbers.

For example, if your 1/4 sim is in the lower right quadrant of a region, that center is 192, 64. So if you want to rez a 64x64x1 prim at 3800m in elevation within your parcel boundaries, you would rez that prim at X= 192, Y=64, and Z= 3500 or 192,64,3500. See how easy? And you are not encroaching on your neighbor. Your prim is smack dab in the middle of your 1/4 sim. No parcel boundary rezzer needed.

I should give this thing away. I'm just charging L$10 because it took me a half hour to write this and knowledge is power. Bwa Ha Haaa.
