The Heinkel He 162 was a German single-engine, jet-powered fighter aircraft introduced by the Luftwaffe in the final stages of WWII. It was developed under the Emergency Fighter Program, a rapid-response initiative to counter Allied air superiority Due to critical material shortages, the He 162 was constructed largely from wood, with metal reserved for other priority aircraft. Despite its rushed development and limited service time, it was among the fastest jets of the war. The Reich Air Ministry officially named the aircraft Volksjäger, meaning "People’s Fighter." It was also referred to as Salamander, the codename for its wing production program, and Spatz ("Sparrow") by Heinkel, the manufacturer.
