MCD Grid Wide Chat Server (boxed)

Welcome to the all new Grid Wide Chat Server from MCD.

This is a private inworld chat server allowing 100's of avatars to connect and chat grid wide.

The entire system is handled inworld with no use of external servers, websites or 3rd party software.

The server itself does very little other than manage connections and provide a list of connected avatars.

A FEW SUGGESTED USES

1) Clubs or venues. Have your patrons use sim chat so you can all chat sim wide, have your staff use a custom channel to for private discussions.

2) Combat / roleplay. Use sim chat for general activity or for trash talk, each faction can use their own channel to co-ordinate activities.

3) If you have land on multiple sims, or your activities are grid wide, consider getting a chat server, set up your own chat rooms and chat with people grid wide.

4) Groups - when some of your members are extra chatty or want to chat off topic and you don't want to annoy or distract your regular members, set up a chat room using an in world chat server.

Most of the workload including all message sending is done by the HUD meaning very low server load and infinitely increasing sending capacity.

The entire system works inworld and does not rely on any external servers, it is a self cleaning and self healing network, if the sim goes down HUD's will automatically reconnect as soon as it is back up.

There are no settings as such and the system will work right out of the box.

Getting started.

1. Rez a server.

2. Name your server using the Object Name Field, The name of the server will be shown on peoples HUD so make it sensible like "MCD Main Chat" or "MCD Staff Chat"

3. Touch the server to gain the servers key, you will need to give this to people to allow them to join your server. You will also be shown a list of all connected avatars with their keys.

4. Banning people, if you need to ban someone from one of your servers simply add their avatar uuid into the "chat server ban list" notecard in the server, add one key per line with no spaces commas or anything else. it should look something like this

5 HUD will ping the server every 90 seconds, the server will remove any HUD's that have not reported in within 2 minutes. When the top light flashes blue the server is removing stale connections.

6 Blinking lights on the server, the top light is power, the middle light signifies HUD's connecting (green) or disconnecting(red) and the bottom light is chat requests, its all really just for show.

About the HUD

The HUD is universal so that people can use one HUD to connect to any server, not just yours.

The HUD's are copy transfer so you can hand them out.

TOP TIPS :

You can add your server details to a HUD prior to handing it out so that people can instantly connect to your server without having to manually set it up.

If you pick up the server and re-rez it the server key will change, if you need to move the server to another sim, simply walk up to it, right click choose "put on" from the pie menu, then choose wear. Teleport to the new location, right click the object and choose drop. This will preserve the server key meaning you don't need to advise users of the new key.
