Materials adds definition through the use of normal and specular mapping, enhancing shine and 3D effects.
To view Materials you will need to have Advance Lighting Model enabled in the graphics settings of your preferred viewer.
Different Windlights can have different affects on Materials, some will change the color effects, some just dont show Materials at all. For a natural lighting that allows materials to show and minimizes ugly shadows I recommend using "neutral". In Firestorm you can find this windlight near the bottom of the list.
