History:
The FA-223 "Drache" (Focke-Achgelis 223 "Dragon/Kite") Was a German Utility Helicopter of WWII. It was the First German Helicopter to reach production status, but, only 20 were built due to allied bombing raids destroying the factories. The Fa-223 was Designed for numerous roles, such as reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, utility, and resupplying mountain troops. The Anti-Submarine variant had either 2 depth charges or 2 550 lbs. bombs or an external fuel tank. Some of the units were quipped with an MG-15 for the Observer/Gunner's seat. The final Variant combined all of these variants into one machine. The Fa-223 had an electrical winch and cable system to carry a decent payload of around 2000 lbs. The Fa-223 also had a record flight from Berlin to Danzig on an important mission to carry a General. The Helicopter traveled the 1,675 km in just 16 hours and 20 minutes.
The FA-223 was also the first helicopter to cross the English Channel after capture. The Fa-223 proved itself worthy in recovering heavy wreckages in the mountain passes. A Dornier crashed in the mountains and a Fa-223 was sent to recover, but the Fa-223 crashed. Thus, another was sent to recover both wreckages. All the parts were retrieved in 10 flights with ground assistance. Finally, as war's end drew closer, a Luftwaffe squadron was opened, called "Transportstaffel 40" or TS/40. It was composed of only Helicopters and Gyro's. 3 FA-223's and 5 FL-282's were in the squadron until wars end, one of the FA-223's were destroyed to prevent capture. The surviving FA-223's were Captured by the US and the UK. The Czechoslovakia received 2 post-war built FA-223's and France received 1 post-war built FA-223.
Now you can own one of these Magnificent Machines!
