PENTECOST ICON (Sergei Posad)
This icon is a representation of the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, based on an original located in Sergei Posad, Russia.
This SL icon is one of our “decorative” or “mute” icons — it is merely a reproduction of an image, as opposed to our “talking” icons, which display quotes from Scripture when touched.
Our icons are created for private use and display in churches and other places in SL. They should not be resold or adapted for resale. Their size and position can be modified. Copy and Transfer permissions depend upon the particular version of the icon purchased.
ABOUT THIS ICON
This image is based on a 15th century icon located at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, St. Serguis Larva, Lergiev Posad, Russia. It is in the public domain. It can be found at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Pentecost_(1420s,_Sergiev_Posad).jpg&oldid=223406486
In it, we see the Apostles gathered, with tongues of fire upon their heads, representing the Holy Spirit. In some versions of icons of this motif, the Holy Spirit is also represented as a dove, and in some Mary the mother of Jesus is also depicted among them. Icons of Pentecost are also sometimes entitled “Descent of the Holy Spirit”.
THE FEAST OF PENTECOST
After Jesus’ Resurrection, he was with the Apostles for 50 days before ascending into Heaven, and instructed them to wait for the Holy Spirit to descend upon them. This occurred on the Feast of Pentecost. Gathered in the upper room, the Holy Spirit descended upon them like tongues of fire. They spoke in other tongues and prophesied, and Peter preached to a large gathering, whereupon many accepted the Lord and were added to their number from the crowd of devout Jews who had gathered in Jerusalem for the feast from every land. These events are reported in Acts 2-3.
