All plants are low-prim as the prim-flowers are temporary rezzed above their pots. Temporary prims don't have land impact for no mesh plants. You can hidden temporary prims.
Plantpets are breedable and breeding them is free.
Each plantpet (except vintage) gives one baby seeds every 52 days (65 days with hidden temporary option checked) if kept at least 50% happy and 50% healthy. If either happiness or health drops below 50% then they stop counting down the days to a baby seed. Both the happiness and the health of a plantpet will recover when its moisture is continuously kept above 40%. Maintaining the moisture of a plantpet above 40% is free and easy. Using the [Water] button in the menu once a week is sufficient for keeping the moisture above 40%.

They need only water to be happy and healthy and they are watered simply by pressing a menu button. Or you can use PlantPets Droplet.
Plantpets can be safely taken into inventory. When a Plantpet is picked up it gets paused, i.e. all stats (including countdown to a baby seed) do not change.

Getting Started

Step 1. Rez your PlantPet seeds on a land where you are allowed to run scripts. Then touch it to get its menu and press the menu button "Grow". Then you will receive the PlantPets Terms and you will be presented with a second menu that lets you agree with the terms. After you press the menu button "I Agree" you will receive the actual potted plantpet.
Step 2. Rez the potted plantpet and touch it to start it.
Step 3. Touch the pot get the control menu. The most important buttons are:
[Watering...] - opens a submenu for watering.
[Speed...] - opens a submenu for changing the speed of growth.

Status Explained

The status of a plantpet has the following meaning:
1) Common - You can get 7 seeds. Available for purchase from Plantpets breeders and the Plantpets main store. Also comes as a baby from another plantpet.
2) Limited - You can get 76 seeds. Available for purchase at the Plantpets main store either for a limited time or in limited numbers. Limited edition plantpets may give a baby seed of the same limited edition with 10% chance.
3) Limited Elite - You can get 153 seeds. Limited edition plantpets may give a baby seed of the same limited edition.
4) Rare - You can get 14 seeds. Only available for purchase from Plantpet breeders. Only comes as a baby from another plantpet.
5) Elite - You can get 28 seeds. Only available for purchase from Plantpet breeders. Only comes as a baby from another plantpet. Also gives a random booster when it gives a baby seed. Only about 10% of all plantpets are elite.
6) Vintage - Vintage seeds deliver plantpets which are NOT BREEDABLE. If you want babys for them, must do mission for Magic Booster. The magic booster refills a vintage PlantPet with 7 seeds. You can found this mission on Plantpets Main Store. These are very old plantpets labeled as vintage in the PlantPets Catalog.

Genes Explained
------------------
The rare plantpets have no color genes (which makes them rare) and the common and limited ones have color genes whose strengths add up to about 60%.
The baby seed depends on the genes of the parent (see the genes in the catalog). The strength of each gene of the parent shows how likely is that gene to be definitely passed to a baby. When a baby is delivered the AI behind the breeding scheme looks at the genes of the parent and decides which genes will be definitely passed. Then it considers the pool of all plantpets which do have those genes (no matter the strength) and randomly picks one of them to be delivered as a baby seed.
