Backgammon is one of the oldest games in existence--about 5,000 years. It may have originated in the old Sumerian empire, what today is Iraq. Backgammon sets were found in pharaohs' graves, like in those of the famous pharaohs Hatshepsut and Tutankhamun, and has remained popular throughout history.

TBF Backgammon is an animated, 7-LI rendition of the classic Backgammon game in Second Life. Click the link 'View Video »' below to see it in action.

A very useful reference guide can be found on the website Backgammon Galore:

The backgammon pack includes a notecard with instructions for playing the game in-world, as well as instructions about how to change the time-out and how enable group access. * Disclaimer:

The game is Mod, but the scripts inside are No Mod. Land impact is 7, but may change upon resizing.

To conserve Land Impact (LI=7), script count (2), sim CPU use (>0.01 ms) and sim memory use (128 kb), the TBF Backgammon game has a few restrictions.

One position on the board, called a 'point' can hold up to 15 checkers. However, the game only displays a maximum of 8. Consequently, a stack of 8 checkers may represent 8 OR MORE checkers in this game. Nonetheless, when checkers are taken off the board (by 'bearing off'), all of them, up to 15 will be visible in the side slots of the board case.

The TBF Backgammon game will prevent the player from moving their checkers illegally. However, there are two rare and complicated rules that are not considered by this version of the game. These rules can be broken if the players are not aware of them. They relate to the following Frequently Asked Questions on the aforementioned Backgammon Galore website:

Ignoring these rules by beginning players does not affect the chances of winning for either of them. Advanced players may also choose to ignore these rules, or, alternatively, be vigilant and bring the rule to their opponent's attention when the situation arises.
