The basket-hilted sword is a development of the 16th century, rising to popularity in the 17th century and remaining in widespread use throughout the 18th century.
Often called Claymore or Claybeg, & used by the Scottish Highlanders in the 17th & 18th centuries, it became a symbol of Scotland after the Jacobite wars.
Since the blade of the rapier had become narrow and thrust-oriented, the heavier blades became known as "broadsword”.
As with the Rapier, both became something of a fashion statement, as well as being worn for personal defence
