Some characteristics of the sim surround landscapes
- The surrounds are 1000x1000 m in size. A sim is 256x256 m, so they cover almost 16 sims (4x4 sims).
- You can change the textures of the surrounds by means of a menu. You can select more than 30 pre-defined textures and even use your own to match the sim ground. You get instructions in a notecard.
- Most surrounds are just one object that consists of 17 prims. Beaches are also 1 object, 17 prims; ocean waves 1 object, 9 prims; reefs 1 object, 2 prims.
- Some surrounds, like the deserts, cover the sim itself too. There are a few ways you can use these landscapes:
1. Raise your sim land level (by terraforming) to a level above the surround. That way you can have a waterless sim, surrounded by an impressive landscape.
2. You can tilt the landscape a few degrees so that on one side of the sim you have water and on the other side you have land.
3. You can lower the landscape altogether. That way the part that covers the sim plus the area directly around it will become water. You then have a sim surrounded by a strip of water, with the off-sim mountains/dunes further away.
- The surrounds are big. Yet they cannot be seen from other islands that are not next to your island, even though on the world map you can see other islands close to yours. It will not bother neighbouring islands EXCEPT if these neighbouring islands are directly attached to yours'.
- You need to be a sim owner or manager to use the surrounds. Consult the owner or manager if you want your island to be surrounded by one of the landscapes.
Lag?
For your viewer the landscapes are a set of sculpted prims with textures. Technically speaking there is not much difference from, for example, a detailed set of furniture. The textures do not contain an alpha channel and are not animated, except for the wave textures. We don't use particle systems. The landscapes take some time to load, but after that they cause no significant lag.

So good I purchased it twice in 10 years
I first purchased this sim surround in 2012 to make a skybox and today I got a second copy because it has worked so well. This really is a great product that has aged very well. I highly recommend.
It should be noted that you CAN use this when you have two regions next to each other as one side is fully open. I have two regions each with their own copy of this background. All I needed to do was rotate one of them 180 degrees and they fit together perfectly, giving me mountains around two regions.
The advice given in the marketplace advertising about this not working with two regions is not correct. It will work with two regions. I think the creator underestimated just how well this product works.

An excellent product to help in creating the essence of living on an island off the coast of British Columbia Canada. Islands there are couched in a cradle created by the Olympic Mountains of Washington State and the Coast Range of mainland B.C., but are open to the Pacific Ocean on the western shores. To counter the sense of living on a lone island in the middle of the South Pacific, I needed a 3/4 surround of lush, high mountains, and this one from Landscapes Unlimited fills the need perfectly. Granted that the texture detail is not photo-realistic and that it uses older mega-prims rather than mesh, it nevertheless makes a superb background adding incredible 3 dimensionality to my home. It has a relatively low LI for a huge lot of landscape and the price will not break your Linden piggy bank.
Worthy of note is the excellent customer service provided by Sominel Edelman, owner of this shop and creator of its products. My questions and concerns were listened to carefully, and response was timely and polite.
