By clicking on the bowl, you can choose what to add: food or water.
If you want, you can rez two bowls and put food in one and water in the other. They work separately.
They have a certain timer. If the avatar is near the bowl, after a time, the food (or water) disappear (as if you ate it) :D
You can't put food on if you're standing at a great distance.
