Though he died young, Philipp Otto Runge (1777-1810) is considered among the best German Romantic painters. "Morning" was the start of a new type of landscape, one of religion and emotion. Planned as the first of four paintings in a series called The Times of Day, it was the only one actually committed to canvas before the artist's death.
