THETOKOS OF VLADIMIR ICON
This icon is a reproduction of an early 12th century Byzantine icon of Mary the Theotokos (literally “the one who gave birth to God”). It is one of our “decorative” or “mute” icons — it is merely a reproduction of an image, as opposed to our “talking” icons, which display quotes from Scripture when touched.
Our icons are created for private use and display in churches and other places in SL. They should not be resold or adapted for resale. Their size and position can be modified. Copy and Transfer permissions depend upon the particular version of the icon purchased.
ABOUT THIS ICON
This icon is dated to the early 12th century, and is thought to have been painted in Constantinople. It was sent in 1131 by the Patriarch of Constantinople to the Grand Duke Yury Dolgorukiy of Kyiv, where it was kept in a monastery and then brought to the city of Vladimir in 1155. According to legend, the horses transporting the icon refused to go further than Vladimir, and this was taken as a sign that the Theotokos wanted the icon to stay in Vladimir. The icon was damaged by fire when the Mongols sacked the city in 1238, and was restored at that time and again in 1431 and 1512. The icon was moved to Moscow in the 14th or 15th century, and legend says that the intercession of the Theotokos through the image saved Moscow from the Tatar invasions in 1451 and 1480. It is among the icons that some claim to have been painted by St. Luke based upon living subjects.
