In the 18th century, the wearing of a sword on all occasions was the outward and visible sign of a "gentleman". More so, it was a requirement of etiquette that a man at Versailles wear a sword at his hip - you were even able to rent them from the concierge's desk if you did not have your own.

The épée de cour or dress sword is a light one-handed sword designed for thrusting which evolved out of the longer and heavier rapier of the late Renaissance. The height of the small sword's popularity was between mid 17th and late 18th century. It is thought to have appeared in France and spread quickly across the rest of Europe.

The Val de Loire epee is an unscripted wearable item used for decoration, attaching to the left hip. Please think of my creation as an item of jewelery.
