Use these scripts to make one or more prims appear or disappear on demand. To do this, you can either issue SHOW or HIDE command on a private channel (if the script is configured to allow it), or use a control script to do it for you.
The scripts can also be made to use link messages instead of chat commands, thus reducing the lag. However, link messages only work withing linked prims.
The behavior of the scripts can be fine tuned (including floating text, channel to use, communication mode, hide or show commands, etc.) via easy options at the beginning of the scripts.
Warning : do not use the script on partially transparent prims as invisibility is achieved by setting the alpha of all faces of the prim to 0 or 1. A more elaborate script will soon be available to take care of this aspect.

Update 2013 march 31st : added a "group"-version of the two scripts. They will only activate when touched by (or hearing) someone who has the correct group tag active.

This script did exactly what I wanted. It has variations for different uses and example prims in the box so it was very easy to implement for my purposes.
