ROBE ANGLAISE

The Anglaise is the most casual of the gowns worn by members of the court. It was only worn during the morning hours - before noon. Instead of a wider skirt worn over a pannier frame, the skirting of the anglaise was worn over several petticoats. This gown is perfect for a morning stroll in the garden; breakfast; morning tea parties or salons.

Like the Francaise, it is indeed a robe that closes at the waistline, then hangs open in the front to reveal the matching petticoat. A stomacher is worn over the front of the bodice, concealing the corset and chemise.

The prims in the skirt of this gown are quite stiff at the top (as they would be supported by the tops of the petticoats (usually 4 of them), but have more flexibility of movement as they near the hemline.

An underskirt is provided to cover the legs while sitting, however the pants are the appropriate length to be undergarments from the late 18th century, and are trimmed attractively. There are also ribbon garter bows included in the box.
