ROBE FRANCAISE:
French Court gowns worn during the 1770s were robes worn over petticoats (which may or may not be made of the same fabric). The robe closed over the bodice to the waist, and was covered by a decorative stomacher. Below the waistline, the robe hung open to reveal the decorative petticoat.
The Robe Francaise was worn over a "pannier" (a framework that was usually made of whale bone, but sometimes of wood), to give the skirt it's shape. The prims in the skirt of this gown are quite stiff at the top (as they would be supported by the pannier, but have some flexibility of movement as they near the hemline.
An underskirt is provided to cover the legs while sitting, however the pants are the appropriate length to be undergarments from the late 18th century, and are trimmed attractively. There are also ribbon garter bows included in the box.
The Robe Francaise was also worn with a "sacque back" which hung to the floor from just below the shoulders (this piece is also included in purchase of this gown).
Only gowns wearing the 1772, 1773, or 1774 Labels of Historical Accuracy are approved for Role Play wear by La Cour Royale de France (Versailles in SL). (This gown DOES wear that label.)
