In the early 2000s, purists lashed out at Stuttgart for trailing away from their roots with entry-level sports cars and crossovers, so by the time the Macau came around, those same cultist worshipers simply batted an eyelid in contempt. Say what they will, one in every twenty sedans in a given wealthy city is likely to be a Macau, so they must be doing something right. Another interesting piece of trivia: the Macau was supposed to be named "Macaw" after the tropical bird, but a marketing mishap in the Taiwanese division (where this is most highly demanded) subsequently had the car branded after a popular Far East tourist spot. The high-end GT is equipped with a supercharged 4-liter V8 at the expense of fuel economy and nearly 1.5 times the base price, but gives the Macau supercar acceleration and the added convenience of a sedan.
