The cartridge 7.92 × 57mm Mauser has been designed by the German Gewehr-Prüfungskommission (GPK) for the rifle Gewehr 1888 and later used for Mauser bolt-action rifles. This cartridge was originally adopted by Germany in 1888 with the name M / 88 7.92 × 57 mm I (I stands for 'Infantry'). Germany adopted a new version of the cartridge M / 88 in 1905 called 7.92 × 57 mm IS (IS stands for 'Infanterie Spitzer'). The cartridge model 1905 cartridge German service in both world wars and is now known in Europe as:
7.92 × 57 mm IS (name German military)
8 × 57 mm IS (name civil C.I.P.)
8 x 57 mm JS / 8 mm Mauser (US designation) (its widespread use in Germany in the Mauser rifles caused the name "Mauser", although the Mauser had nothing to do with the development of this cartridge).
