The cartridge 7.92 × 57mm Mauser has been designed by the German Gewehr-Prüfungskommission (GPK) for the rifle Gewehr 1888 and later used for Mauser bolt-action rifles. This cartridge was originally adopted by Germany in 1888 with the name M / 88 7.92 × 57 mm I (I stands for 'Infantry'). Germany adopted a new version of the cartridge M / 88 in 1905 called 7.92 × 57 mm IS (IS stands for 'Infanterie Spitzer').
