Avoid punches using slips, bobs and weaves, but be careful, because dodging one way will leave you invulnerable to some kinds of punches, but more vulnerable to others. (EX. Ducking into an uppercut, weaving left into a right hook, etc.)
Defend yourself by blocking or clinching your opponent when you really get in trouble!
Mind your stamina! The more punches you throw, the more winded you become! Punch yourself out and you will find it easier to get knocked down and harder to get back up!
