Reproduction of a settee corresponding to a watercolour drawing by Robert Adam, dated 9 March 1780; the settee was commissioned by Sir Abraham Hume, Bt, for his house at 31 Hill Street, Mayfair.
This sofa is in an extremely advanced taste for its time. The straight, unadorned legs and crisply carved lion’s heads are an early manifestation of Adam’s final phase of development, when he moved from a Roman to a more Grecian interpretation of the neo-classical idiom, with a purity of design that almost anticipates the Regency style.
Adam Style; giltwood and embroidered fabric. 100% Mesh.
