CAUTION: You will have the most success with this HUD when you have enough information to know that an avatar is within range; you will need to use a third-party viewer which supports the display of mini-map chat distance rings and / or a precise distance indicator shown on a nearby avatars map. I recommend using the Firestorm viewer for this purpose. It includes both features.

WHAT IS THIS? It is a one-click HUD that:

• Plays a classic air horn sound that can be heard by any avatar (within 100m of the HUD wearer’s location) who has sound enabled

• Shouts the HUD wearer’s name and location information to local chat in this format: “[HUD wearer’s profile link] ([HUD wearer’s username]) is sounding an air horn from [HUD wearer’s current location in SLURL format]” (Example: “Katarin Kiergarten (Katarin Kiergarten) is sounding an air horn from Blake Sea - Crows Nest (89,143,41)”)

(See notes below for caveats regarding parcel settings which can affect your success when using this HUD.)

WHY MIGHT YOU USE THIS? It allows you to easily hail nearby (within 100m) avatars without having to stop and type anything, which can be a hassle while traveling, and it enables them to:

• Find the location you were at when you touched the HUD

• Right-click the location SLURL to teleport to that location

• Open your profile via the provided link

• Right-click your profile link to send you an IM

• Later review the message in their local chat log which shows that you sounded your horn nearby

Perhaps you will come up with other uses—I created this so I can greet fellow travelers quickly and let them respond if they choose, and let them know that I passed by recently by reviewing their local chat log.

In other words, it’s a way of saying hello that isn’t ephemeral like a sound-only horn would be.

NOTES:

1. There are two conditions involving land settings under which one or both of the audible and / or local (nearby) chat features of this HUD will not be detected by an avatar on the other side of a parcel boundary; please verify the status of these About Land settings for both relevant parcels before concluding that the HUD does not work as intended:

A: Sounds will not carry across a parcel boundary if About Land > Options > "Restrict gesture and object sounds to this parcel" is checked.

B: Local chat will not carry across a parcel boundary if About Land > Sound > "Avatars on other parcels can see and chat with avatars on this parcel" is unchecked.

2. The username is included in plain text after the profile link to facilitate a text search of any locally-stored local chat logs; a profile link alone will only include the avatar key.

3. Avatars who are out of the 100m range on any axis including altitude will not detect your horn sound or receive your shouted local chat message; chat rings can only tell you if they would be within shouting distance if that's also true of their altitude. To determine precisely whether someone is in shouting range, use Firestorm's Comm > People (SHIFT-CTRL-A) nearby radar, which will show each nearby avatar's distance away from you.

4. The sound of the air horn will get progressively louder to the nearby avatars within 100m of you as you get closer to one another; an avatar who is 99m away from you will hear a quieter sound than an avatar who is 10m away from you will. Take this into account when considering whether or not someone might hear your horn, which could be drowned out by other sound sources. This is another reason for the inclusion of a shouted local chat message.

PERMISSIONS: The HUD prim is modify & copy to enable you to resize it if desired; the script is copy only.

ATTACHMENT POINT: By default this HUD attaches to the center position with a rotation of 0,0,0. All sides of the HUD which are intended to face away from the viewer are white. If you see white instead of the same red air horn graphic included in this listing, your HUD is not properly rotated as attached. You can edit it to fix this.

  • Plays a classic air horn sound within shouting range (100m) of nearby avatars
  • Shouts the wearer's name, profile link, and location (SLURL) in local chat
