American born landscape artist Alexander Wyant began painting when he lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, and his early paintings were in the precise, linear tradition of the Hudson River School. Later works, such as “Tennessee” show a more “relaxed” style. Low-key colors, atmospheric features and a poetic interpretation of the landscape rendered in a fluid style put his work solidly in the realm of tonalism.
“Tennessee” is unusual in that it was painted during the Civil War, at a time when Northern landscape artists avoided portraying the Southern states.
