Things to remember:

1. Most people have their draw distance set to 128m by default, so if your prim is more than 150 m above the surface it will be out of visual range.

2. Remember to make the prim phantom so that it isn't a hazard to navigation

3. Be patient. Linden Lab's sim map routine updates roughly once a week, so your prim may not show up for a while.
