According to Spier (1992), the preference for ring stones in the Hellenistic period led to a large variety of shapes, dictated partly by the conventional shapes assigned to each type of stone and partly by the current fashion of ring shapes.
Most ancient gems are of some variety of quartz, the most common being carnelian (yellow,
orange, or red in color; when brown, it is termed sard), chalcedony (milky blue, gray, green, or white), agate ( with different-colored wavy bands, which may be black, brown, white, and gray), and sardonyx (usually blue, brown, and white), jasper group (usually red, green, yellow, brown, or black).
Two frequently used types of fine crystalline quartz are rock crystal, a colorless stone, and amethyst, of violet color. Citrine, yellow in color and resembling topaz, was sometimes used in the early Roman imperial period. Garnet was not used until the Hellenistic period, when it became especially fashionable; other precious gems of the Hellenistic and early Roman imperial periods include peridot, emerald, aquamarine, sapphire, and tourmaline.
Since Archaic Greek time Lapis lazuli, deep blue and sometimes with gold pyrite inclusions, and Obsidian, a black volcanic glass, were occasionally used. Hematite, an iron oxide, was frequently used for Near Eastern and Minoan seals, but rarely thereafter until the Roman imperial period. Ivory, also very soft and easy to cut, was most popular in the Peloponnese in the Early Archaic period.
