Low prim fully working antique boats compass

2 prims only with various textures for compass and rose

I hope you like this item, I take a lot of time and care when making all my things to work to a high quality standard, to make sure the textures and various components are aligned and the scripts work. This item is one of a series of low prim instruments and is intended to be easily integrated in your own builds and vehicles.

Despite the complex impression that this item presents it actually comprises of only 2 prims which makes it a good contender for use in any SL physical vehicle where the prim count is limited or just as a nice home decoration.

This compass is an all time classic modern sailing boat type, if you want a gyro boat type compass or a modern one please look at some of my other products.

Technical Specification

Just like a real compass this one must be attached correctly to its host vehicle. This compass has been designed to work such that the compass rose remains more or less horizontal. Both prims comprising the compass should be linked to the host vehicle so that the direction indicating pin is pointing towards the normal direction of travel. None of the compass prims need to be the root prim, indeed it is better if they are not. If the compass is separated from the vehicle again both prims must be re-linked as a separate item, please use the base housing as the root prim.

Both the compass rose and the housing can be modified via owmer only menus, just click on the appropriate part and make your choice.

NOTE – if you want to resize the unit do it ONLY as a linked object or as part of a linked object. If for some reason the three prims move out of alignment then they should be reset to have the same geographical middle point and rotation then re-linked.

The working prim is the prim with the compass rose, this can be used on its own and integrated directly into your own build as a one prim compass.

The instrument is accurate to within 1 degree scale rotation. To reduce computer load the compass updates only twice per second so when turning rapidly the needle may spring a few degrees. Lag may also reduce the smoothness of operation of this instrument.

Permissions Disclaimer and things

This is a modifiable item so that you can change its size and link it easily to your build or vehicle. This also means that you can change textures and any of the other set-up parameters. I encourage experimentation, its how I learn to do things, but please be aware that you do this at your own risk. In plain text that means if you mess it up then get a new one out of your inventory.

Custom Graphics

If you want other graphics then ask me, unfortunately the textures and graphics often take more time than the entire rest of the product development, but you are still welcome to ask. It is not always possible to simply use your own instrument graphics as they are often called from the scripts, I am happy to discuss the integration of your own graphics if they are suitable.

I do not have a shop, just my island. You will find a working depth gauge, speedometer and gyro compass in my submarine at Solitaire (168,21,21), so take a tour and check out the underwater world as well. Otherwise you can see the instruments for real in one of the stalls in the Arab Quarter on my SIM. How to get there? Simple, use the link below to get to Solitaire, left click the sign close to the landing site for the “Lost Souls Club” and you will be transported to the beginning of the Arab Quarter. You should find the stall, its one of the tidier ones – if only it wasn’t for the flies…..

Do come on over and have a look, the island is also worth a little exploration.

Problems viewing sculpties?

To reduce the number of prims this item has an extremely detailed sculpted prim, presently the way sculpties are rendered in Second Life can sometimes cause the sculpted prim to look scrunched up or loose its shape when you move away from the object.

If you see this there is a workaround:

If you dont allready have it call up the "Advanced" menu at the top of the screen with Ctrl-Alt-D, or Opt-Ctrl-D on a Mac.

Towards the bottom of this menu there is an option called debug settings, select that.

You should now have a new small window.

In the textfield type as one word RenderVolumeLODFactor (copy and paste from here)
The standard setting is 1.0 which is much to low.

Setting it to 4.00 or 5.00 should make your SL more solid again and maintain a good performance.
