The water buffalo or domestic Asian water buffalo is a large bovid found on the Indian subcontinent to Vietnam and Peninsular Malaysia, in Sri Lanka, in the Philippines, southern China and in Borneo.
The water buffalo was first domesticated in ancient India, some 5000 years ago. In wet rural areas they proved to be the ideal beast of burden, capable of work in moonsoon conditions or in ricefields. These are also kept for milk and meat. For a rural family in India, Vietnam or Bangladesh, a water buffalo is often the most prized posession and the single largest source of wealth.
