In the mid 1930s, Messerschmitt was tasked with developing a next-generation fighter for the Luftwaffe. However, as Germany had not yet openly rejected the Treaty of Versailles at that time, and the treaty forbade the development of combat aircraft by Germany, the Bf-109 was ostensibly developed as an air racer, with an eye toward armaments later.
This bare aluminum livery was the standard one used on the early Bf-109 prototypes.
