Kōgan (厚顔) is the Japanese transliteration of 'Audacity', it literally translates to 'Thick Face', Based upon the deep water ships that once sailed around Japan and beyond, Kōgan carries herself well, moving with the deliberateness of a ship that can protect itself against most anything.

Just as the previous Schooner class ship 'Xi'an' used leeboards instead of square sails, so does Kōgan. Raising them when running before the wind lessons the impact of sailing on any ships slowest point of sail. While not a sloop, this Brig class ship moves well for her size.

1. As a Brig class ship, Kogan has 25 hit points to keep her afloat and 10 guns to attack or defend herself. The captain also has the option of a pair of gunners with their sitting positions on the twin baskets arranged mid-ships on the deck.

2. The basket lids on deck are for the gunners to "sit" on. the one on the left side (facing the bow) will put that gunner on the Port side of the ship and the Right most basket will sit that gunner to starboard. Their views are directly over the guns on their respective sides. Be sure to hand the gunners a copy of the gun HUD or they will not be able to control or fire the guns at all.

3. 40 degrees is the absolute closest this ship can sail into the wind, anything closer and she will fall off into "irons" and slow to a vulnerable halt. Your choices are then to back sail or kedge to get out of this predicament.

4. With the leeboards in place, they can be raised at 100 degrees but add little to the downwind speed of the ship before 120 degrees. Raising them before 100 degrees will slow the ship to a stop and allow it to slowly drift astern.

5. . With the new Camera system in place, your initial view will be just forward of your AVI's head. You will need to "scroll" the view your mouse to change this. The on screen Camera controls will not allow you to do this and will turn the camera up towards the rigging if you do. The ESC will reset the view back towards the bow of the ship, but will not change the distance you set it at.

6. There are two version of Kōgan in the basket. The regular "full figured" ship in all her fighting glory and a "moored" version that lacks the sails and scripts. This version will look pretty at the dock, sitting peacefully as she moves with the sea.

I am happy to provide help in how to modify the ship within the battle rules. Please just send me a notecard so I am sure to get it.

errata: Yes, there is a small issue with the sails sometimes raising on the wrong side of the mast. We have no idea why it does this, but it will either fix itself once properly adjusted to the wind, or the first time you tack. It does not affect how the ship sails
