A rare Bakhtiari Persian rug. Sourced from my comprehensive catalogues of current and past auction items.
The History of Bakhtiari:
The elaborate homes of the Khans were built in Chahar Mahal Valley in the 18th century. Their elegant gardens became status symbols and inspired the local Bakhtiari tribal weavers, whose work they supported. By the late 19th century oil was found on the Khan's land and their wealth increased dramatically. The local rug industry flourished too. The Khans, who provided the best available materials to the artisans that they patronized, oversaw the growth of a superior rug-making centre. The tradition of excellence continues and can be seen in the generous proportions and beautiful aesthetics of Bakhtiari rugs. Bakhtiari weavers use the same knotting, designs and materials that their ancestors did. Their high quality rugs are hand-woven using wool from their own sheep, coloured with vegetable dyes from local plants, as they were centuries ago.
Description of Bakhtiari Style:
Bakhtiari Persian rugs are hand-woven by the people of the Bakhtiari tribe in the Chahar Mahal region. Bakhtiari rugs generally have a checker board or garden pattern decorated with trees-of-life, birds, flowers and animals. The images can be realistic or abstract. Most Bakhtiari rugs are woven using a Turkish knot, but some of the floral patterns made in Shahr Kurd use the Persian one. These rugs feature long medallions similar to an earlier Isfahan style. Bakhtiari colour schemes feature shades of brown, rust, ochre, green, beige, dark blue and red.
Please note the original dimensions of this rug. Although supplied as modifiable, over stretching may distort the pattern. Also note that as a representation of a handmade product it may have less than perfect linage. This part of the beauty of such a rug.
