Grand Bed:
A majestic “Lit à la Duchesse en Impériale” (a grand canopy bed with curtains), crafted around 1780 for the bedroom of Madame la Duchesse in her private Parisian mansion, the Hôtel de Belle-Isle, renowned as one of the most refined residences in Paris.
The bed is made of finely carved and gilded wood, with two Ionic columns at the foot topped with urns and pinecones. The belt base is adorned with foliage carvings, while the pediment features pilasters decorated with flower garlands, pinecones, and a central arabesque relief trophy with various blooming flowers.
The canopy is richly decorated with neoclassical motifs and moldings, including a large central floral garland. Upholstered in pale powder-blue and cream silk damask, with delicate passementerie, fringes, jasmine flowers, scrolls, and bows—an ensemble that highlights the grandeur of the piece.
Beds of this type were reserved for the highest aristocracy or royal family, both for their ceremonial significance and their extraordinary cost. Often, the price of the fabrics exceeded the cost of the woodwork and gilding. The more fabric used, the more trim and embellishments were needed, making these beds some of the most expensive furnishings in any residence.
This bed is a reproduction of the grand “Lit à la Duchesse” preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of New York.

Included:
a small set of steps to climb onto the bed, made of carved and gilded wood, upholstered in powder-blue silk satin, with scrolls on the upper part.
Unmade version also included.
