In 1774 Louis XVI ordered the creation of a vast and magnificent private library at Château de Versailles. Ange-Jacques Gabriel (1698 - 1782), principal architect of the King, of which the library was his last royal creation, had to place it in the new room in place of his grandfather's "Salon des Jeux" (game room). The neo-classical decor of woodwork and glass cabinets gradually gave way to very beautiful furnishings.

The boiseries (woodwork) can definitely be considered the ultimate work of Ange-Jacques Gabriel and Antoine Rousseau, the first for drawing, the second for sculpture. Their bas-reliefs represent the symbols of literary genres, as well as Apollo and the Arts and France contemplating the portrait of Louis XVI. Above the fireplace, is a gilded bas-relief, of wisdom holding a torch in front of a medallion of the Dauphin, carried by two geniuses.

Because of the French revolution, or most notably the revolutionary sale of 1793 -1794, all of the furnishings and art of the Château de Versailles, including the furniture, mirrors, baths, and kitchen equipment, were sold in seventeen thousand lots.

A good portion of the furnishing is original, notably the large table whose 2.10 meter top is made of a single piece of mahogany, as well as the commode, specially made for this room by Riesener. The two globes, terrestrial and celestial, are also original as well. The rest of the furnishing was made for other residences of the king, notably Château de Compiègne and Petit Trianon, or for other rooms at Versailles like is the case for the Medailler and Console.
