Louis XVI's new library, completed in 1775, only gradually received its final furnishings. Thus, it was not until 1784 that a very rich chest of drawers by Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806) was placed there. To tell the truth, this one was not new, since it had been delivered in 1778 by the cabinetmaker for the "cabinet de retraite du roi" at Fontainebleau. Beautifully veneered, this chest of drawers, with a central projection, presents a rich decoration of marquetry, between diamond marquetry panels embellished with sunflowers. A magnificent still life painting in precious wood testifies to Riesener's virtuosity as a marquetry artist. Very rich gilded bronzes enhance the whole decoration.
