Bibliotheque du Roi - Taboret

This Taboret (Canapé in French) was part of the seating suite made by Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené for Salon des Jeux du Roi (or King's Gaming Room) at Château de Compiègne. A member of an important dynasty of Parisian chairmakers, Sené had been appointed menuisier to the Crown in 1784.

On the eve of the Revolution, the Château de Compiègne, entirely and slowly rebuilt by Ange-Jacques Gabriel (principal architect of King Louis XV of France) and then by his pupil Ledreux, had become a vast neoclassical palace whose royal apartments still needed a large part of their furnishings. It was not until 1790 that the king's games room received an abundant set of forty-two seats, including five Taborets similar to this one. The King and the Royal family, literally prisoners at the Tuileries since 1789, never occupied the premises and therefore never saw the furniture which awaited them in vain. This vast piece of furniture, executed by Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené, is striking with the elegance of its forms and the quality of its classic decor.

Jean-Baptiste-Claude Séne (1747-1803) was a French furniture maker in the 18th century, primarily during the reign of Louis XVI. He came from a noted family of menuisiers, or furniture makers. His grandfather Jean established a workshop, which was inherited by his father Claude I (1724-1792), who earned the title of a master craftsman in 1743, and made chairs and armchairs for Louis XV. Jean-Baptiste-Claude became a master in 1769.
In 1785 Jean-Baptiste-Claude received the title of fournissur to the royal furniture depot, and made chairs, armchairs, stools, fireplace screens, and beds for the Palace of Versailles, Fontainebleau, Compiègne, and of Saint-Cloud. His works were prominent in the private apartments of Marie-Antoinette.
