The blackfin cisco is a large fish native to the Great Lakes of North America.
This silvery, deep-bodied fish with black fins, large eyes, a blunt snout and a terminal mouth, was one of the largest forms of ciscoes. Its preferred habitat was cold sweetwater lakes at depths of up to 180 metres.
It was once abundant in the Great Lakes, however its numbers declined by the 1950s due to overfishing, which occurred during the 1950s. Subsequently the population numbers plummeted sharply due to predation from the invasive sea lamprey species.
The blackfin cisco was last seen in Lake Huron in 1960 and in Lake Michigan in 1969. It is currently considered exitinct by the IUCN Red List.
Author's note:
There are very few recently extinct species available in SecondLife - even less of them are fish. This is my attempt to rectify this to some extent.
Enjoy!
