A Robe à la Polonaise
Popularized between 1770 and 1790, this dress was worn by fashionable high-society ladies for daily wear, but also occasionally for elegant dinners and salons.
Made of gros de Tours silk, moiré, brocade, or other fabrics, the ensemble consists of an underskirt and an upper gown with ruffles gathered at two points with ribbons at the back. It also features a partially visible stomacher and additional trimmings such as bands, bows, or passementerie.
