The Bolchowitinow BI-1 was the Soviet Union’s first operational rocket-powered aircraft, developed during the early years of WW2. Conceived as a rapid-response interceptor, the BI-1 was meant to defend against high-speed German bombers that conventional fighters struggled to intercept.
Designed by Viktor Bolkhovitinov and powered by a liquid-fueled rocket engine developed by Alexei Isaev, the BI-1 was a compact, sleek monoplane capable of reaching speeds up to 900 km/h. However, its flight time was limited to just a few minutes due to high fuel consumption and small onboard capacity.
The aircraft made its first powered flight on May 15, 1942, marking a milestone in Soviet aviation. Test pilot Grigory Bakhchivandzhi was the first to fly it successfully, but he tragically died in a crash during a high-speed test in March 1943. This incident, combined with stability concerns and shifting priorities toward jet technology, led to the project's cancellation
