This authentic Peshawar rug helps to keep the ancient art alive, with an attention to detail and impeccable craftsmanship that cannot be replicated by modern technology. The weavers are descendants of early Peshawar artisans; they recreate their ancestral designs in today’s fashion colors using natural vegetable dyes identical to those of their forebears. Only high mountain wool is chosen for its richness in lanolin, strength and resilience. The wool is hand-sheared, then hand-spun to protect the fibers and increase the life of the carpet. To this day, yarns are pot-dyed over open fires. Weavers will next produce row upon row of symmetrical Gordes knots, the most durable of all oriental carpet knotting techniques. As each horizontal line of knots is completed, weavers use a heavy comb to pack it tightly to the previous row, adding strength and ensuring that the rug will last for generations. Finished rugs are washed in mountain streams and spread on village rooftops where the sun imparts the incomparable Peshawar abrash or ‘worn’ patina.
