Crinoline gowns were fashionable from 1850 up until 1870. Some were quite formal, baring the shoulders and upper part of the chest and back. Those were worn in the evening at dinner parties and balls. (Unless you were Scarlet O'Hara who ignored the rules and bared her shoulders at the barbeque.)Day dresses were more modestly tailored, with high necklines and a variety of sleeve lengths & styles (dependent upon the season of the year). Whether the skirts were hung with fabric that was all the same length, or in layers, they were all worn over a pannier that provided them with a round and full shape. The more wealthy the lady, the larger her pannier skirt might be, since it would be expensive to have a gown made with more fabric than most others were. So, if you see someone wearing a large skirt, they are most likely a member of a very wealthy family. (However, I've recently reduced the size of the skirts to a size more commonly worn as a result of customer feedback. I DO listen to my customers.)
I do not make mesh skirts. The prim skirts are far more realistic for historical gowns that had framework underneath to support their shape.
